Microchipping

A microchip gives your pet a permanent ID, so they can be traced back to you if they’re ever lost. It only takes a moment, and registration is included.

What’s included

  • A microchip for your dog or cat, fitted under the skin
  • Registration of your details, included in the £15
  • A scan to check the chip reads correctly
  • Puppies, kittens and adult pets
  • Your pet’s chip number for your records

What to expect

  1. Book in

Book a microchip on its own, or ask about having it done at the same visit as a vaccination.

  2. Fitting the chip

The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. It goes under the skin between the shoulder blades with a needle, much like a vaccine.

  3. Registration

We register the chip with your contact details and scan it to check it reads properly.

  4. Keep your details up to date

If you move or change your phone number, update your details on the database. It’s the law, and it’s how a lost pet gets home.

Questions

Is microchipping a legal requirement?

Yes, in England. Dogs must be microchipped by eight weeks old, and since 10 June 2024 cats must be microchipped by 20 weeks old. Owners can be fined up to £500 if they don’t comply.

How much does microchipping cost?

It’s £15 for a dog or cat, including registration.

Does it hurt?

Your pet may feel a brief sharp scratch, like a vaccine. It’s over in seconds and no anaesthetic is needed.

My pet is already chipped. Do I need to do anything?

Check your details are up to date on the database the chip is registered with. If you’re not sure the chip is working, ask us to scan it at your next appointment.

Does my pet need a microchip to travel abroad?

Yes. Your pet must be microchipped before or at the same time as their rabies vaccine. Our vaccinations page has more on travel.
