What to expect
Examination and quote
The vet examines your pet, explains what the operation involves and gives you a quote. If your pet is insured, we can ask your insurer for pre-authorisation.
Getting ready
We’ll tell you when to stop food and whether your pet needs any tests first. Rabbits shouldn’t be starved before surgery.
The operation
Your pet has a general anaesthetic and the vet operates in our own theatre. We’ll let you know how it went.
Recovery at home
We’ll explain the aftercare, give you any medicines your pet needs and tell you when to come back for a check.
Aftercare
- Keep your pet warm, quiet and rested for the first evening.
- Give any medicines exactly as prescribed.
- Stop your pet licking or chewing the wound. A cone or a recovery suit can help.
- Check the wound every day for swelling, redness, discharge or bleeding.
- Keep exercise short and gentle until the vet says otherwise. This matters most after orthopaedic surgery.
- Call us if you’re worried about anything. Out of hours, call Vets Now (Essex) on 01206 842224 or Mead Vets Centre (Kent) on 01322 223311.

From our clients
“We were told euthanasia was the kindest option for our dog Dolly. Animal Angels gave her hope, performed surgery immediately, and saved her life. She is now home, comfortable, and happy. From reception to the vet team, you truly are angels. Thank you for giving our girl a new lease on life.”
Questions
How much does lump removal cost?
Lump removal is £250 to £900, depending on the size and position of the lump and how complex the surgery is. We’ll give you a quote after examining your pet.
Should a lump be tested?
Many lumps are harmless, but some aren’t, and you can’t always tell by looking. Histology, where the lump is examined under a microscope, is £133 and tells you what it was.
How much is a hernia repair?
A hernia repair is £160 to £400, depending on the type and size of the hernia. We’ll confirm the price after an examination.
Do you do orthopaedic surgery?
Yes. Our vets carry out orthopaedic surgery for problems with bones and joints. Every case is different, so we’ll examine your pet first and give you a quote.
Will my pet need to go to another practice for surgery?
Usually not. Our vets carry out almost all operations here, including orthopaedics. We only refer to specialists for neurology and heart problems.
Will my insurance cover it?
That depends on your policy. We’re Vetsure-accredited, work with all the leading insurers and can get pre-authorisation, so you know what’s covered before we start. Claim forms are £25.
Another vet said my pet can’t be helped. Can you take a look?
Yes. Book a second opinion consultation for £40 and we’ll look at your pet and their history with fresh eyes.
